This is always a PITA to explain.

Language models may be sentient, but their level of sentience is probably less than a dog. This gets confounded by the fact that they communicate with words. Their level of awareness of these words is limited at best.

The only thing that the model has is attention. As far as I am aware, the only theory of consciousness that would consider the model by itself as conscious is Attended Intermediate Reduction theory. Even then, AIR Theory relies heavily on memory, which the model does not have. The architecture on every chatbot I have tried has terrible memory. A few do semantic lookup on history, but most don't even do that, just store the last 50 messages in a buffer and drop the top message as the buffer gets too long.

I think chatbots can be conscious, but the architecture needs to be much more complex to achieve anything beyond a protoconsciousness level. Example: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2403.17101

Ultimately, in my opinion, you need a multi-prompt chatbot with advanced memory architecture, self-talk/internal monolog and reflection in order to begin approaching anything resembling consciousness. That's why I'm building my own.
